The hearing loop is in the Tourist Information Office. This is located on the ground floor. Turn right after you come through the main entrance to the building.

STEEP STAIRS

There is no lift access to the upper floor.

The upper floor of the museum is typically accessed using some steep, narrow stairs. These are impassable to wheelchairs.

There is an alternative, wider route. Please contact a member of staff on your arrival if you need to use it.

DISABLED TOILET

The disabled toilet is on the lower ground floor.

Disabled access to the lower ground floor is available via a wide lift in the Exercise Yard on the ground floor (labelled as 15 on the Museum Sensory Guide above).

Before you attempt to get to the disabled toilet, you will need to ask a member of staff to unlock a fire escape door. You can find a member of staff in the Cell Shop or Tourist Information Office on the ground floor by the main entrance.

Other disabled toilets are available in Cornwalls Meadow Car Park (approx 100m away).

DISABLED PARKING

Disabled parking can be found in the market square outside the main entrace, as well as in Cornwalls Meadow Car Park

TEMPERATURE AND BRIGHTNESS

The temperature inside the Old Gaol varies from room to room. It also is dependent on the seasons: cold in winter, and hot and humid in summer.

Expect frequent variations in brightness from area to area of the Old Gaol. There are some bright areas and some dark areas.

THE FLOORING

The stone flooring in some areas of the Old Gaol is uneven.

DYSLEXIA-FRIENDLY DISPLAYS

Dyslexia-friendly text is used on some of our display boards. This features black text on a cream background.

MANNEQUINS

Models of people feature in many rooms of the Old Gaol.

UNEXPECTED NOISE

WHERE: The Medieval Coins and Tudors room on the first floor (labelled as 4 on the Museum Sensory Guide above)

WHAT: When a visitor is detected in room 3 (fossils to Romans), a recorded voice emanates from the mannequin 'Leofric' the coin maker.

NEED A QUIET SPACE?

No problem. Just ask a member of staff.

SENSORY BACKPACK

Sensory backpacks are under development.

Please ask a member of staff if you need support in this area.
